Internet TV and Streaming Ads

So here I am, watching some Starcraft 2 on Twitch.tv, enjoying some free entertainment when lo and behold, a video ad interrupts my enjoyment with information on insurance. Okay, whatever. It’s like 30 seconds long; not that awful. About 10-15 minutes pass, and there’s another ad. Meh. Same ad, but whatever. An hour or two later, I find myself reciting the ad, word for word a good minute before it plays.

I think this is going to be a problem.

I think to myself, “Hey, this is the internet, I’m sure someone’s made some sort of app or extension that gets rid of these, right?” After maybe three ads worth of time searching, I find this is actually a really heated argument in the online community. There’s people completely fine with ads for free entertainment, and there are people who’ve decided to avoid online TV altogether simply to never see these repetitive ads again. Personally, I hate ads, but I recognize that they’re a necessary evil. Though, if possible, I’d love to block them and just enjoy my streaming goodness.

What do you think? Necessary evil or annoying waste of time?
